Senior C++ Software Engineer - Protocols & Connectivity (m/f)

openDAQ platform

Job Description

openDAQ defines an abstraction layer for DAQ devices and signal processing blocks, designed to describe virtually any measurement system. What sets openDAQ apart from other standards (e.g. OPC UA, MQTT, ASAM, EtherCAT) is that it doesn't aim to stand apart from them, but to bring them into a shared ecosystem. We do this through translator modules that map other standards to and from the openDAQ model, so that existing third-party software can connect to openDAQ, and vice versa.

As the Protocols & Connectivity software engineer, you'll own these translators. You'll design, build and evolve them, making sure they're secure, perform well under real-world data loads and conform to each protocol's standard. You'll also maintain the protocol infrastructure in the openDAQ core, and keep track of evolving industry standards to help shape the openDAQ roadmap.

What you will do

  • Develop modules that translate DAQ and industrial standards (e.g. OPC UA, MQTT, ASAM) to and from the openDAQ model

  • Build shared protocol infrastructure in the openDAQ core

  • Extend and maintain the protocol-facing parts of the openDAQ API

  • Implement protocol security, including encryption, authentication, authorization and certificate management

  • Optimize data streaming performance (bandwidth, latency, resource usage)

  • Ensure interoperability with third-party products that use the supported protocols

  • Integrate and test third-party protocol libraries used by openDAQ

  • Track and research relevant industry standards

  • Maintain clear documentation and examples of how openDAQ maps to each protocol

Requirements

Not all are strictly necessary, but we expect you to learn whatever you do not yet know.

  • Strong knowledge of C++

  • Experience with CMake

  • Understanding of software architecture and design principles

  • Knowledge of network stacks and basic socket programming

  • Experience working on larger backend projects

  • Solid understanding of API design

  • Familiarity with various backend libraries

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of secure programming practices

  • Experience with industrial or communication protocols

  • Experience working on long-lived platforms or SDKs

Applications from less experienced candidates are also welcome if they demonstrate strong motivation and technical understanding.

What we're looking for in you

  • Critical thinking: You question assumptions and don't accept ideas at face value. You consider the wider context, and you aim to solve problems, not just ship features

  • End-to-end ownership: You research, plan and execute your work, from the initial idea to final validation

  • Curiosity and a drive to learn: You enjoy working with and learning about new technologies and tools, and you're comfortable starting a task with incomplete knowledge and learning as you go

  • Collaboration: You work towards shared goals, not just your own tasks, and are comfortable offering, asking for, and accepting help

What we offer

  • Work on an open-source core used by industry worldwide

  • Direct influence on architecture and the long-term direction of openDAQ

  • Technically challenging and meaningful work without “feature churn”

  • Collaboration with experienced engineers in core systems and protocols, including those from Dewesoft and HBK

  • Competitive salary and a performance-based bonus system

  • Location: Trbovlje, Slovenia. Possibility of a hybrid work setup

  • Rewards: based on individual and company performance

  • Employment type: Full-time
